Why Tutoring is (mostly) Not Allowed

Our community thrives on the principle of students helping students (not tutors), for free. While we encourage collaboration and knowledge-sharing, we’ve had to take a firm stance against paid tutoring to protect our members. Unfortunately, some individuals have exploited this trust—either by scamming students out of money or engaging in unethical practices like writing tests for others. To maintain a safe, honest, and supportive environment, we enforce strict rules: only approved tutors are allowed, and anyone soliciting payment for help will be immediately removed.

We understand that some may see tutoring as a way to earn extra income, but this is not the place for it. If you’re passionate about helping others, we encourage you to contribute freely, just as so many before you have. Together, we can keep our community safe, honest, and focused on what truly matters: learning and growing as students, for students.

That said, we recognize that students sometimes need extra support. UNISA offers fantastic resources – from official study guides and Tutorial Support Services to online forums. These help you succeed without compromising integrity or community trust. If you’re struggling, we encourage you to explore these free, reliable, and university-endorsed options first.

The Problems with Paid Tutoring

  1. Scams and Exploitation – Unfortunately, not everyone offering paid help has good intentions. There have been cases where students paid for tutoring, only to receive no real assistance—or worse, were outright scammed. We refuse to let our community become a marketplace where trust is broken for financial gain.
  2. Unethical Behavior – Some so-called “tutors” have crossed a dangerous line by asking for students’ login details or offering to write tests for them. This is not just unethical—it’s academic dishonesty that undermines the integrity of our entire community. We cannot and will not tolerate actions that compromise the hard work and honesty of our members.
  3. Distracting from Our Mission – Our platform is not a business directory for tutors. It’s a place for free, peer-to-peer support where students help each other without hidden motives. Allowing paid services turns our community into a commercial space, which distracts from our original purpose.

The Rules Are Clear

To protect our community, we have strict guidelines in place:

  • Only approved tutors who meet our ethical and transparency standards may offer structured help. You can find their rules [here].
  • We will immediately remove anyone caught soliciting money for assistance—no exceptions.
  • Sharing or requesting login details, exam answers, or any form of academic dishonesty is grounds for an instant ban.

Our mission remains clear: a community by students, for students, built on mutual respect and shared growth. Let’s keep it that way.
